Nitrite Cycling in Warming Arctic and Subarctic Waters

چکیده

The primary nitrite (NO2?) maximum (PNM) is a typical feature of oceanic nitrogen (N) cycle, yet its characterization in the world ocean remains gap. By combining natural abundance NO2? isotopes with geochemical model, we report for first time that formation Arctic and subarctic PNMs dominated by ammonia oxidation, while oxidation main sink. Notably, plays more important role waters than low- mid-latitude waters. residence PNM further suggests cycle Ocean dynamic other marine ecosystems. Our findings provide insights into N dynamics upper ecosystem.

Toxoplasma gondii in the Subarctic and Arctic

The coccidian protozoan Toxoplasma gondii has a world-wide distribution. It causes toxoplasmosis, a potentially very serious disease to humans and other warm-blooded animals. Infection has in many studies been shown to be rather common in the Nordic countries also, where its prevalence both in domestic animals and wildlife can be explained by contacts with cats and their faeces, cats and wild f...

Arctic tropospheric warming amplification?

Relative rates of temperature change between the troposphere and surface, and the mechanisms that produce these changes, have long been a contentious issue. Graversen et al., predicated upon the ERA-40 reanalysis, report polar tropospheric amplification of surface warming and attempt to explain this finding dynamically. Here we show (1) that data from satellites and weather balloons indicate th...

Environmental Radiocesium in Subarctic and Arctic Alaska Following Chernobyl

Radiocesium ('34Cs and '37Cs) concentrations were measured in soil, plant and wildlife samples from subarctic to arctic Alaska. Concentrations of 13'Cs ranged from below detectable or low levels in whale and fish samples to as high as 242 Bqkg in lichen. For all potential human food items, the radiocesium concentrations measured in this study were below accepted permissible levels for human con...

Pliocene palaeoceanography of the Arctic Ocean and subarctic seas.

The Pliocene is important in the geological evolution of the high northern latitudes. It marks the transition from restricted local- to extensive regional-scale glaciations on the circum-Arctic continents between 3.6 and 2.4Ma. Since the Arctic Ocean is an almost land-locked basin, tectonic activity and sea-level fluctuations controlled the geometry of ocean gateways and continental drainage sy...
